“Year one of running a one-person agency, in 4 lessons (the last one I’m still working on)

One year ago I started Waypoint Affiliate Marketing. I’ve been quiet on here for a while, so here’s what year one actually taught me.

1. Don’t chase the money.Early on, every opportunity feels like one you can’t pass up. Some companies will offer more than the work should cost. That sounds like a win until you realize the number comes with expectations you can’t reach, no matter how well you manage the relationship. I’d rather overdeliver on a fair deal than spend months trying to justify a big one.

2. Your network is your pipeline.Cold email rarely works. Nearly every conversation that

turned into real work started with someone who already knew me, or knew someone who did. Say what you want about LinkedIn, but the connections here are real, and reaching out to people you’ve worked with is the highest return thing I do every week.

3. Treat your time like inventory. There’s always more to do: client work, sales, invoicing, follow-ups, the website you keep meaning to update. You can’t do all of it well. Know your limits and set honest expectations with clients. Set them with yourself too. Overpromising to a client hurts. Overpromising to yourself burns you out slowly and quietly.

4. Get out of the bubble. This is the one I still struggle with. A one-person shop gets lonely, and you lose the value of real conversation: someone pushing back on an idea, or mentioning something you hadn’t thought about. Go to industry events. Work from the library. Find the places that leave you feeling invigorated, even if it’s only for a few hours.

5. Fair beats big.The clients who’ve worked out best weren’t the biggest names or the biggest budgets. They were the ones where scope, expectations, and fee all lined up from day one. That’s the kind of work I’m building Waypoint around.

Year two goal: more of #4. If you’re in affiliate or performance marketing and want to grab a coffee, my DMs are open.
